How Shopify fees work in Switzerland

Selling on Shopify in Switzerland means three separate costs eat into every order, and it is easy to under-count them. This calculator brings them together so you see real profit per unit, not just the headline margin on your product.

  • Subscription: a fixed monthly plan fee, spread across the orders you actually take.
  • Payment processing: a percentage of each sale plus a small fixed fee, charged by Shopify Payments or your gateway.
  • Third-party transaction fee: an extra Shopify charge that only applies if you don’t use Shopify Payments.

On top of those sit your product cost, shipping and advertising; the calculator subtracts all of them to give net profit, margin, break-even price and the maximum you can spend on ads per order before you lose money.

Shopify plan pricing in Switzerland (CHF)

Shopify bills Basic, Grow and Advanced in Swiss francs, monthly or annually; annual billing lowers the effective monthly fee, for example from CHF 29 to CHF 21 on Basic. Plus is quoted separately in euros from roughly 2,100 € a month.

Swiss payment methods

Shopify Payments in Switzerland supports the local methods Swiss shoppers expect. Each is selectable in the calculator’s advanced options:

  • Standard card (Visa / Mastercard)
  • American Express: Amex costs 3.15% on Basic against 2.95% for a standard card, a smaller premium than most markets.
  • International card: Cards issued outside Switzerland cost the same as Amex on every plan.
  • TWINT: Switzerland's dominant mobile wallet is much cheaper than cards: 1.75% on Basic down to 1.45% on Advanced, plus CHF 0.30.
  • Klarna: Flat 2.99% + CHF 0.35 on every plan.

Shopify Payments works directly in Switzerland, no external gateway needed, but the card rates run higher than the eurozone: 2.95% + CHF 0.30 on Basic for standard online cards, falling to 2.55% on Advanced. The bright spot is TWINT, the mobile wallet most Swiss shoppers use, at 1.75% down to 1.45% depending on plan, roughly half the card rate. If TWINT is a large share of your checkout mix, your blended processing cost looks very different from the headline card rate.

Third-party gateway fees

If you use an external payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee on top of whatever your gateway charges: 2% on Basic, falling to 0.2% on Plus. Switch the calculator’s payment method to “Third-party provider” to enter your gateway’s own rate and see the combined cost.

For most Swiss merchants, using Shopify Payments removes this fee entirely and is the cheaper route unless a specific gateway gives you a materially better processing rate.

MWST considerations

Switzerland's standard MWST rate is 8.1% (since January 2024), far below EU VAT rates. Switzerland is outside the EU, so the OSS scheme does not apply: domestic businesses register once worldwide taxable turnover passes CHF 100,000, and foreign sellers shipping into Switzerland often need to register from their first sale depending on the goods. Storefront prices are shown gross, so divide a CHF 108.10 price by 1.081 for the net amount.

This tool works in net (MWST-exclusive) terms. If your listed prices include MWST at 8.1%, convert to net before entering them so your margin reflects money you actually keep.

How this calculator works

Every figure is traceable to a formula:

Net profit = Price − COGS − Shipping − Ads − Processing − Third-party fee − Plan allocation

  • Processing fee = Price × rate% + fixed fee
  • Plan allocation = Monthly plan fee ÷ Monthly order volume
  • Break-even price = (fixed costs + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − variable fee rate)
  • Max ad spend = profit per order before advertising is deducted

MWST is excluded throughout. The price-sensitivity table re-runs the full model at ±10/20/30% of your price so you can see how margin moves before you discount or raise prices.
