How Shopify fees work in Portugal
Selling on Shopify in Portugal means three separate costs eat into every order, and it is easy to under-count them. This calculator brings them together so you see real profit per unit, not just the headline margin on your product.
- Subscription: a fixed monthly plan fee, spread across the orders you actually take.
- Payment processing: a percentage of each sale plus a small fixed fee, charged by Shopify Payments or your gateway.
- Third-party transaction fee: an extra Shopify charge that only applies if you don’t use Shopify Payments.
On top of those sit your product cost, shipping and advertising; the calculator subtracts all of them to give net profit, margin, break-even price and the maximum you can spend on ads per order before you lose money.
Shopify plan pricing in Portugal (EUR)
Shopify bills Basic, Grow and Advanced in euros, monthly or annually; annual billing lowers the effective monthly fee, for example from 27 € to 19 € on Basic. Plus is quoted separately from roughly 2,100 € a month regardless of store currency.
Rates last verified 2026-08-05. Shopify occasionally adjusts pricing, so always confirm against the official Portugal pricing page before committing.
Portuguese payment methods
Shopify Payments in Portugal supports the local methods Portuguese shoppers expect. Each is selectable in the calculator’s advanced options:
- Standard card (Visa / Mastercard)
- American Express: Amex runs from 3% on Basic to 2.7% on Advanced, plus the 0.30 € fixed fee.
- International card: Same percentage as Amex on every plan, but with no fixed per-transaction fee.
Shopify Payments rates in Portugal fall as you move up plans: 1.8% + 0.30 € on Basic, 1.6% + 0.30 € on Grow and 1.5% + 0.30 € on Advanced for standard online card payments. Amex and international cards share the same higher percentage, up to 3% on Basic, though international cards skip the fixed fee. Multibanco and MB WAY do not appear in Shopify's published rate table, so they are not modelled here; cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay cover most Portuguese checkout volume on Shopify Payments.
Third-party gateway fees
If you use an external payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee on top of whatever your gateway charges: 2% on Basic, falling to 0.2% on Plus. Switch the calculator’s payment method to “Third-party provider” to enter your gateway’s own rate and see the combined cost.
For most Portuguese merchants, using Shopify Payments removes this fee entirely and is the cheaper route unless a specific gateway gives you a materially better processing rate.
IVA considerations
Mainland Portugal charges 23% IVA at the standard rate (the Azores and Madeira use lower rates). Storefront prices are normally shown IVA-inclusive to consumers, so divide a 123 € selling price by 1.23 to get the 100 € net figure. Sellers shipping into Portugal from elsewhere in the EU only charge Portuguese IVA once their EU-wide cross-border sales pass the 10,000 € OSS threshold.
This tool works in net (IVA-exclusive) terms. If your listed prices include IVA at 23%, convert to net before entering them so your margin reflects money you actually keep.
How this calculator works
Every figure is traceable to a formula:
- Processing fee = Price × rate% + fixed fee
- Plan allocation = Monthly plan fee ÷ Monthly order volume
- Break-even price = (fixed costs + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − variable fee rate)
- Max ad spend = profit per order before advertising is deducted
IVA is excluded throughout. The price-sensitivity table re-runs the full model at ±10/20/30% of your price so you can see how margin moves before you discount or raise prices.
Frequently asked questions
Basic costs 27 € a month, or 19 € a month billed annually, with the highest rates: 1.8% + 0.30 € per online card payment and a 2% surcharge if you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments. As volume grows, the lower rates on Grow (1.6%) and Advanced (1.5%) start covering their higher subscriptions. Spread the plan fee across your real monthly orders in the advanced options to find your crossover.
On Basic, a card issued outside Portugal or an American Express runs at 3% instead of the standard 1.8%. Amex keeps the 0.30 € fixed fee per transaction while international cards have no fixed fee at all. For stores with a large share of foreign customers this gap can matter more than the plan subscription itself.
The standard rate on the mainland is 23%, and storefront prices normally include it. Divide a 123 € selling price by 1.23 to get the 100 € taxable base. Selling into Portugal from another EU country only triggers Portuguese IVA once your EU-wide distance sales pass the 10,000 € OSS threshold.
If you connect a gateway like PayPal or Stripe instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own fee on the order value: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. That stacks on top of the external gateway's charges, which is why Shopify Payments works out cheaper for most stores.
Annual billing lowers the effective monthly fee on every plan, for example from 27 € to 19 € on Basic and from 74 € to 56 € on Grow. The trade-off is paying the full year upfront, so it only makes sense once you are confident the store stays on the same plan for 12 months.
