How Shopify fees work in Romania
Selling on Shopify in Romania means three separate costs eat into every order, and it is easy to under-count them. This calculator brings them together so you see real profit per unit, not just the headline margin on your product.
- Subscription: a fixed monthly plan fee, spread across the orders you actually take.
- Payment processing: a percentage of each sale plus a small fixed fee, charged by Shopify Payments or your gateway.
- Third-party transaction fee: an extra Shopify charge that only applies if you don’t use Shopify Payments.
On top of those sit your product cost, shipping and advertising; the calculator subtracts all of them to give net profit, margin, break-even price and the maximum you can spend on ads per order before you lose money.
Shopify plan pricing in Romania (RON)
Shopify bills Basic, Grow and Advanced in Romanian lei, with roughly a 25-29% discount for paying annually. Plus is quoted separately in EUR (from 2,100 EUR a month), and Shopify Payments payouts in Romania can be received in either lei or euros.
Rates last verified 2026-08-05. Shopify occasionally adjusts pricing, so always confirm against the official Romania pricing page before committing.
Romanian payment methods
Shopify Payments in Romania supports the local methods Romanian shoppers expect. Each is selectable in the calculator’s advanced options:
- Standard card (Visa / Mastercard)
- American Express: Amex runs from 3% on Basic to 2.6% on Advanced, about 1.1 percentage points above the standard card rate.
- International card: Priced the same as Amex on every plan.
Standard card rates fall from 1.9% on Basic to 1.5% on Advanced, each plus 1.25 lei per order. Amex and international cards are priced identically to each other on every plan, from 3% on Basic down to 2.6% on Advanced, a smaller gap to standard cards than in most of the other markets researched here. Shopify's Romania payment-methods page does not list a distinct Romanian local payment method such as a bank-transfer scheme, so cards and the standard wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay) cover most checkout volume.
Third-party gateway fees
If you use an external payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee on top of whatever your gateway charges: 2% on Basic, falling to 0.2% on Plus. Switch the calculator’s payment method to “Third-party provider” to enter your gateway’s own rate and see the combined cost.
For most Romanian merchants, using Shopify Payments removes this fee entirely and is the cheaper route unless a specific gateway gives you a materially better processing rate.
VAT (TVA) considerations
Romania raised its standard VAT (TVA) from 19% to 21% in August 2025, with a unified 11% reduced rate for food, medicine and other essentials. Storefront prices are VAT-inclusive, so divide by 1.21 for the net amount at the standard rate. Domestic businesses register once turnover passes 395,000 lei (roughly 80,000 EUR) a year, while non-resident distance sellers register once EU-wide sales pass the 10,000 EUR OSS threshold, well below the domestic figure.
This tool works in net (VAT (TVA)-exclusive) terms. If your listed prices include VAT (TVA) at 21%, convert to net before entering them so your margin reflects money you actually keep.
How this calculator works
Every figure is traceable to a formula:
- Processing fee = Price × rate% + fixed fee
- Plan allocation = Monthly plan fee ÷ Monthly order volume
- Break-even price = (fixed costs + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − variable fee rate)
- Max ad spend = profit per order before advertising is deducted
VAT (TVA) is excluded throughout. The price-sensitivity table re-runs the full model at ±10/20/30% of your price so you can see how margin moves before you discount or raise prices.
Frequently asked questions
Basic costs 139 lei a month, or 99 lei billed annually, with the highest card rate at 1.9%. Grow (369/279 lei) cuts that to 1.7%, and Advanced (1,940/1,460 lei) to 1.5%. The subscription jump from Grow to Advanced is large, so it only pays off once your order volume is high enough for the 0.2 percentage point rate saving to outweigh the extra 1,571 lei a month.
Amex and international cards cost the same as each other on every plan in Romania: 3% on Basic, 2.8% on Grow, and 2.6% on Advanced, each plus 1.25 lei per order, about 1.1 percentage points above the standard card rate. Shopify does not list a distinct Romanian local payment method on its payment-methods page, so most checkouts run through standard cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Shop Pay.
Romania's standard VAT (TVA) rose from 19% to 21% in August 2025, with a unified 11% reduced rate for food and other essentials. Storefront prices are VAT-inclusive, so divide by 1.21 to find the net amount. Domestic sellers register once turnover passes 395,000 lei a year, but if you are selling into Romania from elsewhere in the EU, the much lower 10,000 EUR OSS threshold applies instead.
Using a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments costs an extra 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, charged on top of that gateway's own fees. Shopify Payments in Romania can pay out in either lei or euros, which covers most reasons a merchant might otherwise reach for a third-party processor.
Annual billing brings the subscription down by roughly 25-29%: Basic from 139 to 99 lei a month, Grow from 369 to 279 lei, and Advanced from 1,940 to 1,460 lei. Card processing percentages stay the same regardless of billing frequency, so the annual plan is a straightforward way to lower fixed costs once you are committed to the store.
