How Shopify fees work in Norway
Selling on Shopify in Norway means three separate costs eat into every order, and it is easy to under-count them. This calculator brings them together so you see real profit per unit, not just the headline margin on your product.
- Subscription: a fixed monthly plan fee, spread across the orders you actually take.
- Payment processing: a percentage of each sale plus a small fixed fee, charged by Shopify Payments or your gateway.
- Third-party transaction fee: an extra Shopify charge that only applies if you don’t use Shopify Payments.
On top of those sit your product cost, shipping and advertising; the calculator subtracts all of them to give net profit, margin, break-even price and the maximum you can spend on ads per order before you lose money.
Shopify plan pricing in Norway (NOK)
Shopify bills Basic, Grow and Advanced in Norwegian kroner, with roughly a 25% discount for paying annually. Plus is quoted separately in EUR (from 2,100 EUR a month) since it is not eligible for local currency billing under Shopify's own policy.
Rates last verified 2026-08-05. Shopify occasionally adjusts pricing, so always confirm against the official Norway pricing page before committing.
Norwegian payment methods
Shopify Payments in Norway supports the local methods Norwegian shoppers expect. Each is selectable in the calculator’s advanced options:
- Standard card (Visa / Mastercard)
- American Express: Amex costs a full percentage point more than a standard card on every plan.
- International card: Priced the same as Amex on every plan.
- MobilePay: Priced identically to a standard card on every plan, unusual among the markets Shopify covers, where local wallets are often more expensive than cards.
- Klarna: Flat 2.99% plus 4.00 kr on every plan, the same regardless of tier.
Card rates fall steadily as you move up in plan: standard Visa and Mastercard cost 2% on Basic, 1.9% on Grow and 1.8% on Advanced, each plus 2.00 kr per order online. Amex and international cards cost a flat percentage point more at every tier. MobilePay, Norway's dominant mobile payment method, is priced identically to standard cards rather than as a premium option. Klarna sits apart at 2.99% plus 4.00 kr, unchanged across plans.
Third-party gateway fees
If you use an external payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee on top of whatever your gateway charges: 2% on Basic, falling to 0.2% on Plus. Switch the calculator’s payment method to “Third-party provider” to enter your gateway’s own rate and see the combined cost.
For most Norwegian merchants, using Shopify Payments removes this fee entirely and is the cheaper route unless a specific gateway gives you a materially better processing rate.
VAT (MVA) considerations
Norway's standard VAT (MVA) rate is 25%, with reduced rates of 15% for food and drink, and 12% for passenger transport, accommodation and cinema tickets. Most general merchandise stores use the 25% rate. Storefront prices are VAT-inclusive, so divide by 1.25 for the net amount. Norway sits outside the EU, so the EU's One-Stop Shop does not apply. Foreign sellers must register for VAT from their first sale into Norway, though low-value goods under 3,000 kr per item can use the simplified VOEC scheme instead of full registration.
This tool works in net (VAT (MVA)-exclusive) terms. If your listed prices include VAT (MVA) at 25%, convert to net before entering them so your margin reflects money you actually keep.
How this calculator works
Every figure is traceable to a formula:
- Processing fee = Price × rate% + fixed fee
- Plan allocation = Monthly plan fee ÷ Monthly order volume
- Break-even price = (fixed costs + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − variable fee rate)
- Max ad spend = profit per order before advertising is deducted
VAT (MVA) is excluded throughout. The price-sensitivity table re-runs the full model at ±10/20/30% of your price so you can see how margin moves before you discount or raise prices.
Frequently asked questions
Basic is the cheapest at 389 kr a month, or 289 kr billed annually, but it carries the highest card rate at 2%. Grow (1,030/770 kr) cuts that to 1.9%, and Advanced (4,490/3,370 kr) to 1.8%. Once your monthly card volume is high enough, the lower rate on Grow or Advanced covers the higher subscription cost, use the advanced options to check the break-even point for your own order volume.
MobilePay, the payment method most Norwegian shoppers reach for, costs exactly the same as a standard card on every plan: 2% on Basic, 1.9% on Grow, 1.8% on Advanced, plus 2.00 kr per order. Amex and international cards cost a full percentage point more at every tier, from 3% on Basic down to 2.8% on Advanced. Klarna is priced separately at 2.99% plus 4.00 kr, unchanged regardless of plan.
Norway's standard VAT (MVA) is 25%, with lower rates of 15% for food and 12% for transport, accommodation and cinema tickets. Prices shown to Norwegian shoppers are VAT-inclusive, so divide by 1.25 for the net amount on general merchandise. Norway sits outside the EU, so there is no distance-selling threshold to wait for, foreign sellers register from their first sale, though low-value orders under 3,000 kr can use the simplified VOEC scheme instead.
Using a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of whatever that gateway charges. Given how competitive Shopify Payments' own rates already are in Norway, especially for MobilePay, most merchants have little reason to route around it.
Annual billing cuts the subscription by roughly 25%: Basic falls from 389 to 289 kr a month, Grow from 1,030 to 770 kr, and Advanced from 4,490 to 3,370 kr. Card processing rates do not change either way, so committing to a year is a straightforward way to lower fixed costs once you know you will keep trading.
